The Swan Song of Sundance Records

On April 1, 2012 a small, yet significant element of everyday life fades to black. Sundance Records & Tapes shop in San Marcos, Texas is closing its doors after faithfully serving as refuge to local music lovers for the past 35 years. From the welcoming glow of its art nouveau sign and the eclectic and overwhelming interior of music memorabilia to the aroma of calming incense and the quiet noise of the curious patrons, Sundance has all that an old or modern hippie could want in a music store.  Manager, Greg Ellis, said it best, “Dude, if you’re a record store then you’re a magnet for everybody and that includes the odd and disenfranchised…”

Sundance is having a going-out-of-business sale through the end of March, but as Greg states, “mostly we want people to come in, experience the store and take a little piece of it home with them…before it’s gone.”

And on Saturday, March 31, Sundance will be hosting an all day celebration and is “welcoming people who have played here before and people who have always wanted to” to spend a few minutes in front of the microphone and share their music with the world.

The store also features special spots in homage to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain as well as fallen Texas stars, Stevie Ray Vaughn, DJ Screw and Selena.

If you’re in the San Marcos area, then drop by and say goodbye to what has been described as the “best vinyl collection in the State [of Texas]”[1]. And if you live elsewhere, then discover your local record store and cherish it before it too ascends into the harmonious heavens.
